Hi. It’s me. On a Sunday. Welcome to this special Sunday Weekly Spill. I was busy living life on Friday, but we don’t need to get into it. If you missed it, I shared a mid-week newsletter about librarians being chic on Wednesday. I guess the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, missed it because he just slashed the New York City Public Library budget. Now they have to stop slaying on Sundays. In all seriousness, please support local libraries because they are so important. So, now that we’ve been serious and civic-minded, let me spill my beans:
Stacy’s Cinnamon Sugar Pita Chips: I tried these because they were with the free snacks at my new job (yes, i am soft launching employment thank you) and they taste like the cinnamon twists from Taco Bell. I know these have been a thing, but I’m just very into them right now so let me be happy, okay?
Karlie Kloss buying I-D magazine: I’m not exactly sure how I feel about this, but I am fascinated. Did she save a (formerly) indie print publication or has she just placed a historically edgy magazine centered around youth culture under the control of the Kushners? This isn’t her first magazine purchase, she (along with Aryeh Bourkoff, Jason Blum, Kaia Gerber, Kirsten Green, and Lewis Hamilton) bought W in 2020, and I think W has put out some really great issues in the last couple of years. Maybe she’s super hands-off? I had no idea she owned it until this week.
The After Work Drinks podcast compared her acquisition to famous people purchasing sports teams, which I thought was a really interesting comparison. It is very exciting that rich people want to invest in print magazines. At the same time, I heard that as soon as she bought I-D, all of their Instagram posts about Palestine were deleted, which is fishy. I think the strangest thing is the choice of I-D. It feels random because Karlie Kloss doesn’t scream I-D to anyone. It would almost make more sense for her to try and save Seventeen or Glamour or any number of other struggling publications. I guess the only thing to do is to wait and see how this shakes out.
Skims Winter campaign: I am obsessed with everything Nadia Lee Cohen does, so it shouldn’t be shocking that this made the list. What really has it on my brain though, is the validation I feel because I pitched a 60s mod ski shoot concept over a year and a half ago. It is always nice to be reminded that my finger is, indeed, always on the pulse.
Commodity’s Book Fragrance: I picked up a sample this week, and so far, I like it a lot. It’s pretty similar to Le Labo’s Santal 33, but not exactly the same. If you want an exact dupe for Santal, I would go for Maison Louis Marie No.4. It’s almost identical, it just doesn’t last as long. I do really love the No.4 candles, and will sometimes treat myself to one. Book lasts a bit longer, I’m really enjoying it. And if you are wondering why I don’t just repurchase the Le Labo one, it’s because they keep upping the price.
The Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Vogue shoot: I’ve read so many takes on this shoot/story and I will continue because I am sort of living for the discourse. This really did not go well for them. To be a fly on the wall at One World Trade this past week…
It’s certainly wacky. In no way did this make me think that these two are just a relatable couple next door. Nor did it feel like I was getting a real peek behind the curtain. Mostly I just wonder: How did every bad decision end up getting made at every available turn? I will say the memes have been fantastic. The calls for the end of print magazines have been disturbing. I’m linking two substack posts that I really loved about this whole situation, so go read those!
Now I would like for someone to please get to the bottom of why Barbra Streisand was at their engagement party because that is keeping me awake.
Shucked: I won lottery matinee tickets, so I went to see Shucked again last Sunday. It might have been even better this time around. I’m really sad that it’s closing because it is the perfect show for when a family member visits. The score is underrated, the book is funny, and to be in the room while Alex Newell sings Independently Owned is worth the ticket price.
GQ’s Men of the Year Covers: Yeah Kim is on here twice. Sorry about it. These covers are great, and anytime an issue of a magazine generates buzz I’m excited. They’re just really, really cool. Also, I love to see men whining over Kim being on the cover of the Men of the Year Issue. Between the Barbie movie and this, it’s been a tough year for them. Boo hoo.
I will also just be leaving some of the shots from the Jacob Elordi spread here. Thank you to the GQ team for these. Lovely work.
Martha Stewart canceling her Thanksgiving: okay queen! You know you’ve really made it when you can make headlines for not doing things.
That’s all the beans for this week divas! I am working on a gift guide that should be going out soon. Mostly because I think that I’m really good at giving gifts, and most gift guides are lame. So, keep an eye out for that! And if you find yourself stuck with nothing to talk about at Friendsgiving, by all means, feel free to talk about me. Recommend the newsletter. Discuss amongst friends. Slay.
