Well… at least it’s Friday? It has been an insane and emotional week, but I am thankful for the distraction that writing The Weekly Spill brings. I strongly encourage putting the phone/social media/news away for a few hours and watch a movie or read a silly romance book. I watched The Last Days of Disco on Wednesday and it helped. Other than the obvious, here are all of the things I can’t stop thinking about this week:
The Grammy nominations: I love a nomination day. Thank you to the recording academy for this timing, we all needed something new to fight about. Here are my quick first thoughts:
Cowboy Carter is now the most nominated album of all time, and—if the academy does the correct thing—will finally win Beyoncé her long overdue Album of the Year trophy. What she did with that album is truly special and I think it’s something we will be talking about for a long time.
I am kind of shocked (in a good way!) at how well Brat did. The Grammys usually overlook Charli, so I am glad she is getting her recognition this year.
Thrilled to see so many nominations for Sabrina and Chappell. I love both of those albums. My prediction is that Chappell will walk away with the Best New Artist trophy, but that award can be a little bit of a wild card so who knows?
Taylor’s nominations feel slightly compulsory given how TTPD was reviewed, but she does kind of run the music industry at this point so I’m not shocked.
Plus: the swifties will definitely watch the ceremony if she’s there, and who would turn down a guaranteed ratings boost? It’s interesting that they chose to nominate the Billie Eilish remix of “Guess” rather than “Girl, so confusing” with Lorde. I know the Grammy voters love Billie, but the Lorde collab felt like the bigger moment to me.
Stereophonic was robbed of a Musical Theater album nomination.
I would love to see Beyoncé win in some of these country categories because that would be a delicious little cherry on top of the fuck you sundae for the angry country music fans.
Kacey Musgrave’s Deeper Well is another favorite from this year, and I am really happy to see it nominated. If Beyoncé doesn’t shut out the country categories, I would be very pleased with some wins for Kacey. Personally, I think Deeper Well should be on the AOTY list, but that’s just me I guess.
Obsessed with Barbra’s nomination for audiobook narration. She’s got stiff competition going against Dolly Parton and Jimmy Carter (dream blunt rotation?), but they’ve got to give it her. My Name Is Barbra is 48 hours long.
Challengers deservedly picked up a nom for Best Film Score…. cough cough Oscar voters are you paying attention?
Beyoncé is now the most Grammy nominated and awarded artist in history with 99 nominations and 32 wins. That feels correct.
Conclave: Who knew the Vatican was actually Diva Central this whole time? I had so much fun watching this. I think it’s best to go in blind, so I don’t want to say too much about it.
I hate to report bad news, but I must say I am deeply concerned about my fellow AMC movie patrons—particularly the girl I overheard telling her friend how much she hates Stanley Tucci. “He just makes every movie worse, it’s like a bad jump scare.” Girl, are you okay? What is going on there? Are you okay? What has gone wrong to cause you to form such a bad opinion? It’s very troubling. Seek help.
Olivia Rodrigo’s red flag indicator: When asked about her dating red flags in a recent interview, Olivia Rodrigo said this:
“I always ask them if they think they would want to go to space. And if they say yes, I don't date them. I just think that if you want to go to space, you're a little too full of yourself. I think it's just weird.”
At 21, she is already an oracle of knowledge. So wise. So correct. I can’t stop thinking about it.
Lana Del Rey for Vogue Italia: I bet she’s the only wife of an airboat gator tour guide to be on the cover of Italian Vogue, and that is really special.
The accompanying interview mentions that her upcoming country/southern gothic album is inspired by her time spent in Arkansas
(and Mississippi but who cares). She’s obsessed with Arkansas. Someone get this woman a hog hat!
McDonald’s photo lab: Did we peak as a society in 1999 with McFoto? Has it all been downhill since? You could get a disposable camera with your Big Mac!
this bow serve set: Do I need these? Realistically, I’m not having cake that often, but… if I were to have cake, how would I serve it without these? I don’t currently own a serve set, and I’m sure at some point I will need one. Do you see my predicament? Maybe if I bought this, it would be motivation to host people and serve them cake.
Jonathan Bailey performing “Getting Married Today” from the Company revival: Don’t ask how many times I’ve watched this in the past week…
We Live In Time: If Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh are there, count me in. This is the kind of movie we rarely get anymore. When was the last time we had a true romantic drama in theaters? I wrote in my last Weekly Spill about the importance of casting good actors in the romance genre, and this film features two of our strongest.
Both of have history of being robbed at the Oscars, but I can’t get into that right now.I might sound crazy, but there’s something about the way that Andrew Garfield acts with his eyes that had me feeling like maybe he’s the next Tom Hanks. Does anyone else see it or just me?I already have a lot of anxiety about time being limited and fleeting, and this movie doesn’t not trigger that. At the same time, there is a part of me that can’t wait to rewatch it.
Nora Ephron at the Movies by Ilana Kaplan: As someone who loves both Nora Ephron and coffee table books, this has obviously been on my wishlist since it was announced. It was released last week, and I have been exercising an enormous amount of self-control by not buying it.
My plan was to save the book for my Christmas list, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to leave it behind when I see it in a bookstore. Basically, I just want you all to know that this book is taking up very valuable and limited space in my brain. I hope my fellow Nora-heads can relate.
That’s all the beans for this week! I am seeing Ragtime at City Center tomorrow, and I am so excited. Look forward to my thoughts on that next week. I hope you divas have a lovely weekend. I suggest doing something fun (like reading this post), and spending time with people you love (make them read it too). I’m open to other fun recommendations though, so if you have anything let me know!
