Happy Friday! I would love to give you a long and detailed update of my week, but Hurricane Lee has me migraine-d out. So, I’ll just get on with spilling this week’s beans.
The Rachel Incident by Caroline O’Donogue:
This is one of my favorite books I’ve read so far this year. The way that the author captures friendship feels so real. I read a lot of “depressed women ruining their life” literature, so it isn’t super often that I read characters who I would actually want to spend time with. Not only do I want to hang out with these characters, but they feel so real that I sometimes felt like I was a part of this friend group. I would describe it as a cross between Sally Rooney and Dolly Alderton. I highly recommend reading it and then listening to the episode about it that Caroline did on her podcast (previously mentioned in The Weekly Spill #2) with Dolly which made me want to pick up the book and read it all over again.
Pride and Prejudice (2005):
I rewatched this the other night and wow it holds up. Every shot is gorgeous, the score is beautiful, the acting is amazing, and Keira Knightly’s historically inaccurate bangs are wispy and perfect. This might be one of the most romantic movies ever made, and the couple only has one kiss at the very end. I think this Jane Austen girl might be going places!
My migraine hat: hurricane season’s hottest accessory!
Be Kind Rewind Valley of the Dolls video: I love this YouTube channel, and when I saw that she uploaded this hour-long video on Valley of the Dolls, I knew it was going to be a good one. This is part one and I am anxiously awaiting the second half. Valley of the Dolls is such an iconic camp classic, and it has so much juicy lore surrounding the making of it. Many say that the holy trinity of camp is Valley of the Dolls, Mommie Dearest, and Showgirls. So if you haven’t gone on that journey, I urge you to do so. Triple feature?
While you are at it, I recommend watching the Be Kind Rewind videos on the Joan Crawford/Betty Davis feud, the films of Dolly Parton, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Broey Deschanel also has fantastic video essays including one on Valley of the Dolls (and one on Showgirls).
This article on the economics of the bow trend: I have many fashion thoughts, but I am holding out until after London, Milan, and Paris to really see how things shake out. Obviously, bows have been a huge trend this year and they don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. I love the trend personally, though that probably is not a surprise to anyone. However, I was not aware of the upcharge that brands are placing on bows. I also think this is really interesting fashion reporting and a much-needed break from the over-labored discourse on the societal implications of the trend.
These reviews of home items: I love watching this guy rate random home decor items on TikTok. This is cocomelon for judgy people.
Tiktok failed to load.
Enable 3rd party cookies or use another browserWe are throwing around the title of it-girl a little too flippantly: something to think about. This also applies to icon, iconic, and legend. Not everyone who shares “get ready with me” videos is an it-girl. In fact, you could argue that none of them are. So let’s just stick with influencer or content creator until it-girl status is proven okay? Similarly, don’t call yourself one of these things. It’s like a nickname, you can’t bestow that on yourself, diva.
Haricot Vert: I have had this brand in my Instagram saved folder for over a year, but they seem to be really having a moment right now. The only reason I haven’t bought anything is that I am incredibly indecisive (especially when I want everything), and I really want to go to one of her create-your-own workshops. The pieces are so unique and I love that everything is customizable. Also, the name means green beans in French. So obviously I need because… beans, duh. This week the brand announced an exclusive NYC-inspired collection for the MoMa Design Store, so I guess there isn’t any sense in continuing my gatekeeping. You’re welcome!
This photo:
Not to sound like a broken record, but this is something else I have had in my saved folder for over a year now. For some reason, I keep seeing people talk about this picture this week. I saw 2 TikToks discussing it this morning and saw someone else post it on Instagram. I think it is a really cool photo (which is why I saved it over a year ago) but I don’t know why it has blown up this week. Did someone big share it or something? If you have answers, let me know because I am so curious.
Lauren Boebert being escorted out of the Beetlejuice tour due to her horrendous theatre etiquette: As someone often annoyed by my fellow patrons’ lack of theatre etiquette, this made me giggle. Vaping, flash photography, loudly singing, waving her arms in the air, throwing a fit when people around her asked her to stop, filming long portions of the show….. she really did it all. She tried to spin this, claiming that she was forced out for “enjoying the show too much” and denied that she was vaping. The released security tapes say otherwise. As she was being escorted out she flipped off the ushers and, of course, had to shout that age-old question: “Do you know who I am?”
Thanks for reading! I’m working on a post about the VMAs for next week so get excited about that. If you have any tea about that foot photo, let me know. If you have anything else you think I need to know about, by all means, hit me up. Gotta go put my migraine hat on and sleep now! xoxo divas.
